Relevant Experience

Freelance Journalist (2002–present). Write news, feature, and service articles on a range of policy issues for national magazines and websites. Identify trends, develop story pitches, identify and interview sources, shape story directions, manage final read-back, and promote published articles through social media and radio interviews. Clients include The Fiscal Times, Salon, The American Prospect, Good, Men’s Health, The Crime Report, and The Albany Metroland (see “Journalism [Selected]” below). Conceived and developed proposal for annual branded product for The Fiscal Times (“Annual Federal Government Report Card”) (under consideration).

Consulting Writer-Editor and Proposal Writer (2002–present). Write reports, newsletters, and promotional materials on best practices in child welfare reform and youth policy (see “Policy Reports and Articles [Selected]” below). Provided lead concept creation and writing, rewriting, substantive editing, copyediting, and editorial proofreading in support of these and other project publications. Conducted staff trainings and briefings on writing and editing. Worked with graphics specialists to develop attractive designs for publications and promotional materials. Edited Spanish-language publications.

Publications Manager and Senior Writer-Editor, National Clearinghouse on Families & Youth, JBS International, Inc. (1994­–2001). Wrote, edited, and oversaw the development of youth policy briefs and reports–a quarterly newsletter, two to four reports annually, speeches, semi-annual research summaries, promotional materials, and fact sheets (see “Policy Reports and Articles [Selected]” below). Wrote web-based training for youth workers. Managed layout of publications and editorial process, supervised editors, served as lead staff person overseeing government clearance process, oversaw publications from concept through printing, oversaw conversion of hard-copy materials to web-compatible format. Wrote procedures for producing publications and correspondence. Edited Spanish-language public education materials. 

Senior Editor, Editorial Services Group, JBS (1992–1994). Provided substantive editing, copyediting, and editorial proofreading for a range of clients. Conducted substantive and copy editing for five semiannual reports on national and international substance abuse trends. Translated conference proceedings from Spanish to English. Conducted substantive and copy editing and oversaw incorporation of field review comments for technical assistance publication on methadone treatment. Managed all phases of editing, proofreading, and production of report on rural issues in substance abuse treatment.

Copyeditor-Proofreader, SSR, Inc. (1992). Conducted copyediting and developed editorial style guidelines in support of publication services contracts with federal agencies, including the U.S. Departments of Education and Defense and a range of private-sector clients.
