Overview

Journalist and editor who produces investigative and feature stories on domestic policy, business, and other issues, with a focus on criminal justice and immigration.

Experience

Freelance Journalist (2002–present). Write investigative, news, feature, and service articles on a range of domestic policy issues for national magazines and websites. Develop story pitches, draft and edit stories, and promote published articles through TV and radio interviews and social media. Clients include Al Jazeera America, Salon, The American Prospect, Good, The Fiscal Times, Men’s Health, The Crime Report, and Comstock’s Magazine.

Consulting Writer-Editor and Proposal Writer (2002–present). Write winning proposals for federal contracts. Write reports, newsletters, and promotional materials on best practices in child welfare reform and youth policy. Provided lead concept creation and writing, rewriting, substantive editing, copyediting, and editorial proofreading in support of these and dozens of other project publications. Conducted staff trainings and briefings on writing and editing. Worked with graphics specialists to develop attractive designs for publications and promotional materials. Edited Spanish-language publications.

Managing Editor and Senior Writer-Editor, National Clearinghouse on Families & Youth, JBS International, Inc. (1994–2002). Wrote, edited, and oversaw the development of youth policy briefs and reports–a quarterly newsletter, two to four reports annually, speeches, semi-annual research summaries, promotional materials, and fact sheets. Wrote web-based training for youth workers. Managed layout of publications and editorial process, supervised editors, served as lead staff person overseeing government clearance process, oversaw publications from concept through printing, oversaw conversion of hard-copy materials to web-compatible format. Wrote procedures for producing publications and correspondence. Edited Spanish-language public education materials.

Steven Yoder

A writer and editor with more than 10 years of experience in print and online media, I’ve written for Salon, The American Prospect, Good, Men's Health, The Fiscal Times, and others—my work also has been picked up by many outlets, including The Huffington Post, MSN Money, and The Week.

While my focus is domestic policy--particularly criminal justice, immigration, and youth policy--I also write about real estate, business, and a range of topics from how to manage a brain freeze to whether people can be happier after getting fired and how much truth there is on consumer complaint websites. Though a journalist first, I also write winning contract proposals and have 20 years of experience as a managing editor, substantive editor, and copy editor.
